Quick Tip: Did your Mura upgrade fail?

mura 0 comments

With my blog still running on Mura 5.5, I figured it was about time that I upgraded to 5.6. I logged into the admin and ran the update, only to find that Hostek caps the execution time on scripts. This is usually a good thing, but in this case my upgrade got cut off midway through. I was no longer able to access the admin and reloading Mura via the URL didn't help. I spoke to Hostek support, who increased the execution limit for the upgrade script, but I was still at a loss as to how I was going to run it! Anyway, if you find yourself in a similar situation, you can hit the upgrade script directly by accessing it at /admin/index.cfm?fuseaction=cSettings.list&action=updateCore (duh). Hopefully this will help some poor, lost soul with a broken Mura upgrade.

Hiding Mura Navigation Elements From Unauthenticated Users

Today on the Mura Show, frostino asked how he could hide a navigation item from display until a user logged in. Mura is built in such a way that it displays all navigation items regardless of whether a user is logged in or not and then forces the user to log in if they try to navigate to one of those pages. This seems counter-intuitive to me - I prefer to show the user what they have access to and not tease them with stuff they can't get to :). But, I digress. The question piqued my curiosity, so I went digging and came up with an easy solution.

Overview of Some New Features in Mura 5.5

mura, coldfusion 0 comments

We've been waiting for a while, and finally Mura 5.5 is available! Tons of cool new features include the all-new Form Builder, Display Object Configurator, CF Static integration, and more! Most of the topics I'm covering in this blog have been covered in the Mura Show, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to gather it all in one place. I'm not going to cover everything in the feature list, but hopefully it can be of some use!

Working with Mura CMS's MuraProxy.cfc

mura, coldfusion 2 comments

I was speaking to Jas Panesar(http://panesar.net) recently about automating some mundane Mura tasks. He suggested I take a look at MuraProxy.cfc, which I had seen before but never really bothered to look into. It ended up not being sufficient for what I was hoping to do, but it did give me something fun to experiment with. Disclaimer: I have never worked with web services in CF before, so some of this may be trivial or just plain wrong. Please feel free to correct me in the comments below!

It should be noted that MuraProxy appears to be in a beta-ish stage. I believe it was originally added in the 5.2 release, but there doesn't appear to have been a whole lot of work on it since then. It's a great concept and I would love it if the guys over at Blue River would flesh it out some time and add some documentation. Of course, I know they're quite busy with the upcoming release of 5.5(which I highly recommend checking out if you have not yet).

We are up and running!

mura, railo, hostek 2 comments

After asking around a bit on Twitter, I settled on Hostek to host my new site. It seemed like a good deal, and I figured I could spare $8 to find out. Little did I know, there was a $10 credit when I signed up for a Railo Linux account, so my first months appears to be free! If only the rest of my adventure could have been that easy...
